Public School Educators Can’t Serve, Board Members Appointed

Today, the Kentucky House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 4, and the message to educators is clear. The final days of this legislative session demand vigilance. With just ten days left in the 2026 session, the pace in Frankfort is intensifying and the risk of harmful, last-minute legislation is real. Click here to email your legislators or call 1-800-372-7181 and tell them to reject SB4 and its anti-educator, anti-democracy concepts.

SB 4 represents a direct threat to public education and to the democratic principles that have long guided local school governance and American ideals. SB 4 excludes educators from serving on their own local school boards and replaces the will of voters with appointed members. This shift takes power out of communities and places it in the hands of politicians, weakening local voices and silencing the professionals who understand schools best—educators.

Educators know that strong public schools depend on transparency, accountability, and community trust. When decisions are made through backroom political deals rather than at the ballot box, students and schools lose. SB 4 moves Kentucky in the wrong direction by allowing Frankfort to take over local school boards and by denying educators the right to serve their communities in leadership roles.

As the clock runs down on the session, KEA members should be alert. Historically, the final days are when harmful provisions can be rushed through with little public scrutiny. Anti-public education efforts often appear when attention is divided and time is short.

Standing up as educators means refusing to look away. KEA’s Lobby Team is active and involved in Frankfort every day and will send out a call for Rapid Response to KEA members if anti-public education bills advance or harmful changes are made.

Now is the time to stand up, stay informed, and protect our schools, our profession, and the rights of educators. Our communities depend on it, and on us.

Stay Vigilant and Stay Tuned!
