Active
Active Membership in the Kentucky Education Association is open to any person who is actively engaged in educational work in the Commonwealth of Kentucky; who is on limited leave of absence from education work; or who is serving as an executive officer of the Association or of a local affiliate. Active members who have been discharged may continue to hold active membership for as long as a legal challenge to such discharge is pending.
Where required, active members must hold, or be eligible to hold, a regular legal certificate or permit. Active membership is limited to persons who support the Purposes, Goals, and Objectives of KEA and maintain active membership in the National Education Association and a local KEA affiliate where eligible.
Active members receive association publications; may vote, run for elective office and hold appointive positions in the Association; are eligible for legal assistance and the Educators Employment Liability Program; may use Member Benefit services; and may participate in other association programs and benefits.
KEA dues are determined by the KEA Delegate Assembly. NEA dues are determined by the NEA Representative Assembly. Local association dues are determined by each local association.
Associate
Associate Membership in the Kentucky Education Association is open to any person who is interested in advancing the cause of public education but who is not eligible for any other category of membership.
Associate Members may not vote or hold elective or appointive positions in the Association. Associate Membership does not include Legal Assistance. Associate Members receive KEA publications.
KEA dues are determined by the KEA Delegate Assembly. There is no Associate category for the National Education Association.
Ethnic Status
NEA is committed to assuring equitable representation of members of ethnic minority groups at all governance levels of the Association. NEA Bylaw 12-1(h) states: "Ethnic minority shall mean those persons designated as ethnic minority by statistics published by the United States Bureau of the Census. This designation shall specifically include American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, Black\African-American, and Hispanic." In order to facilitate achievement of the goal of minority involvement, if you are a member of any of these groups, please check the appropriate box. Ethnic minority information is optional. Failure to provide it will in no way affect your membership status, rights or benefits in NEA, KEA, or any of their affiliates. This information will be kept confidential.
Former Member
Former members of the NEA/KEA Student Program are entitled to discounted dues during their first year of eligibility of teaching. Check the appropriate box on the membership form for a 50% discount on KEA dues and to receive information about an NEA dues rebate of $10 per year of student membership, up to $40 for four years.
Part-Time Teacher
Part Time Teacher Membership is available to teachers who are employed 50% or less of the normal schedule for a full-time employee and who is not employed as a substitute. Part Time Teacher members must hold an earned bachelor's or higher degree and/or a regular vocational or technical certificate. Where required, active members must hold, or be eligible to hold, a regular legal certificate or permit.
Part Time Teacher Membership, like Active Membership, is limited to persons who support the Purposes, Goals, and Objectives of KEA and maintain active membership in the National Education Association and a local KEA affiliate where eligible.
Part Time Teacher members receive association publications; may vote, run for elective office and hold appointive positions in the KEA; are eligible for legal assistance and the Educators Employment Liability Program; may use Member Benefit services; and may participate in other KEA association programs. Part-Time Classified Support Professional Employee
Part Time Membership is available ONLY for those who are employed 50% or less of the normal work schedule for a full-time employee and who is not employed as a substitute. Where required, active members must hold, or be eligible to hold, a regular legal certificate or permit.
Part Time Membership, like Active Membership, is limited to persons who support the Purposes, Goals, and Objectives of KEA and maintain active membership in the National Education Association and a local KEA affiliate where eligible. Reserve Membership
Reserve Membership in the Kentucky Education Association is open to any person granted a leave of absence of at least six (6) months but no more than two (2) years who was an active member in the association at the time they were granted the leave, but whose employment status no longer qualifies them for active membership. Reserve members must also be members in good standing with the National Education Association.
Reserve Members may not vote or hold elective or appointive positions in the Association. Reserve Membership does not include Legal Assistance. Reserve Members receive Association publications and are eligible for Member Benefit services. KEA dues are determined by the KEA Delegate Assembly. Dues for the National Education Association are determined by the NEA Representative Assembly. Local association dues are determined by each local association.
Substitute Membership
Substitute membership in the Kentucky Education Association is open to any person employed as a substitute on a day-to-day basis who would otherwise be eligible for active membership.
Substitute Members may not vote or hold elective or appointive positions in the Association. Substitute members must also be members in good standing with the National Education Association. Substitute members receive association publications and can utilize most Member Benefit services. Substitute membership includes the Educators Employment Liability Program but does not include the Legal Assistance Program.
